Gay Pride in Bakersfield

I had no idea that Bakersfield ever participated in Gay Pride until a week ago when I received an email from the Human Rights Campaign asking me if I wanted to volunteer.

“Of course I want to volunteer” was my first thought.

I got on AIM and told our good friend Venda that I would volunteer if she would volunteer, of course I was going to do it anyway, I just wanted to see if she would do it too lol.

She agreed that she would do it so I sent her the email from HRC so she could sign up.

You know it’s funny, I haven’t been to a gay pride in years.  The first and last time I ever went to gay pride was when I was 23 years old and that was in West Hollywood.  They had a parade and then they had like this fair afterwards with these booths where you walk around from booth to booth getting free stickers and what not.

The reason it has taken me this long is because when I lived in Hollywood, we just never had the money to go anywhere and then we moved here and we just figured that Bakersfield would never have a gay pride.  Well, they do now.

I’ve never volunteered for this kind of thing so I can’t wait for tomorrow.  It’s like Disneyland but the only mice you will find are really bears.

At first I thought I should be worried about protesters but it doesn’t matter, they can suck an egg for all I care.  I’m not even going to waste my time thinking about them or waste any of the fun I’m going to have when I’m handing out whatever it is I will be handing out.

If you are in Bakersfield Saturday October 15th, come see me at Stramler Park between 1-4pm.  I’ll be the bald guy with the glasses.

Haunted By Your Soul by Marguerite Labbe

I just finished the book Haunted by Your Soul today which is the sequel to My Heart is Within You by Marguerite Labbe.

The first book is about this ancient vampire named Kristair who is looking for a vessel. He finds Jacob at a football game and stalks him for months before getting the courage to meet him. Although Jacob knew what game was being played and he played along wanting Kristair just as much.

At the end of My Heart is Within You, Kristair dies. In this sequel he has ascended but that doesn’t stop him from wanting to be with Jacob. He finds a way to be with him even though he is a ghost.

These 2 novels have been my very first gay novels that I have ever read and I just loved them. They were heavy on the sex scenes in both books (yes, a spirit and a human found a way lol) and I was just fine with it.

What’s funny is that the author is a married woman with a son. You would never think that a straight married woman would have those gay sexual thoughts in her head but there you have it.  I was aroused by a straight woman.  Be lucky because that is the first and last time you will ever hear me say that.

What drew me to these books out of the hundreds or thousands of gay e-books out there was one word.  Vampire.  My main search was Vampire because I’ve always wanted to read a gay vampire story and this was perfect.

The way Mrs. Labbe writes her version of vampires was perfect for me.  I love vampires and what makes me love them is that every writer adds something new to the vampire mythology which keeps me on my toes because I never know what new rule will apply.  In her vision, ancient vampires have some special powers like walking through walls and mental telepathy despite the distance, magic heart, memory and soul transplants.  You name it, this vampire can do it.  It also gives younglings the ability to do their own tricks like disappear completely from view.

I won’t reveal to anyone how this one ends, you’ll have to see for yourself.  I will be buying the final book in the trilogy the first week of October and reading it towards the end of the first week once I’ve finished reading the 2nd Sookie Stackhouse novel.

The final book is called Our Sacred Balance which from what I understand, Kristair is now human.  No longer a vampire he has no way of defending himself since he doesn’t have the super powers he had in the first novel and all the power he had given to Jacob is all but gone.  The vampires are after these two helpless humans.  I can’t wait to find out what happens in the conclusion of that story.  For some odd reason I wish that it wasn’t the last of their story.  I wish it wasn’t a trilogy at all.

Rest In Peace Kitty

This morning our cat Shanaynay passed away.  I don’t know the exact time but it was between 6:30am and 8am.  On Memorial Day no less.  So every Memorial Day I will remember her.  She was born some time in October 1994.  I couldn’t narrow down the exact date so I gave her October 31st for her birthday.  She passed away at age 14 1/2.

She was the best kitty anyone could ever hope for.  The day we got her I was actually in bed sleeping and I woke up and saw this little tiny kitten sitting there on the bed and the first thing that I said was awwwww.  Here are some pictures that we took of her the first month we had her.  Click the small thumbnails to open them up full size.

When she was around 6 months old she started her howling thing because she was going into heat for the first time so we had to have her fixed.  It was so funny to hear her howl but that was the first and last time she had to go through that for the rest of her life.

Some of the memories I have of her are from when I would change the sheets on the bed, she would jump up and she would do her little dance where she would pounce sideways with her ears back and her head cocked to the side.  She also did not like her mirror reflection and she would do the same thing but to the mirror.

There was another thing that she used to do where I’d like have her face in my hand and she would kick and scratch my arm with her back feet.  It didn’t hurt as much though but she loved to play.

Over the years she calmed down and stopped wanting to play and just became a very calm kitty.  She didn’t like to have another animal in the house besides herself so we could never have any more cats or even a dog.  Then one day Darrin found a little kitten inside of a box in the middle of the street.  We took care of her and gradually let the 2 of them see each other until they were living peacefully in the same house.

This picture was actually forced upon her, she did not like that at all lol.  I had to take the picture as fast as I possibly could.  That other kitty we never did name her but the Vet named her Baby when she passed away.

Then we got Flower last year, our Toy Chihuahua.  Shanaynay didn’t care.  The dog was a little too rambunctious for her though and she would scratch Flower when she got too playful.

Shanaynay mostly lived inside of our indoor patio.  It gave her the feeling of being outdoors while keeping her inside so she was happy.

She was diagnosed with Diabetes 2 1/2 years ago and we were told that she wouldn’t live very long if we didn’t give her insulin shots but they wanted so much money for the blood tests and then we’d have to pay for the insulin.  I think the dollar amount was like $600 the vet said for the tests.  I was ready to have her put to sleep then but Darrin said no, let’s give her a chance to die on her own.

I ended up changing her diet and instead of giving her the dry food which I believe was the Whiskas and the Friskies, I started giving her the canned Friskies and she did a 180.  She was walking on the back of her legs instead of her feet and when I switched her food she started walking normal again.  She didn’t stop drinking like a sailor and peeing a lot though but at least her legs were fine.

But I end this by saying that she was my favorite pet in the whole world and there is no other person or animal who could ever take her place.  I love you Shanaynay.  Take care of yourself wherever you are.

Edit:  Thanks to my friend Alyce for buying me the wood burning kit I have the tools to make a little grave stone (or grave wood).  Here is what it’s going to look like.
