Dark Shadows: The Revival (1991)

I have had this on my Hulu Queue since I saw Dark Shadows with Johnny Depp and I don’t know why it took me so long to watch it, but I finally finished it today.  There are only 12 episodes and it is totally worth watching.

According to IMDB, the original Dark Shadows had 1225 episodes, but Netflix is only showing 162 episodes.  I saw the first season which is 40 episodes, but haven’t seen the 2nd season yet because I kinda got bored with it.  I don’t know what made me decide to watch The Revival on Hulu, but I am glad I did because it was an awesome version of the story.

I don’t know if Dark Shadows The Revival is a condensed version of the original, but I really liked it.  I wouldn’t have minded if they had more than 12 episodes, but I think I was satisfied with what I got to see.  If it is just a condensed version, I can only imagine how much I missed from the original series that I will never get to see.

The best part of this series is we get to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a child who plays David Collins.  Also Pretender Jarod Michael T. Weiss plays Joe Haskell… without a shirt… yum yum gimme some!

I could go on about how I liked one more than the other, but who really cares what I think?  Just go watch it on Hulu before it expires on 1/2/2013.

Sliders Seasons 1-3 on Hulu

I never saw the show Sliders when it was on TV in the mid to late 90’s and I regret that.  This is the type of show that I would watch too.  Thankfully Hulu has it to watch from the very beginning, but only the first 3 seasons.

This show was in my Hulu queue and I was rushed to watch all 3 seasons because they were supposed to expire at midnight on August 31st but for some reason it’s still there so if you haven’t seen it, there is still a chance.

I looked for a description of the show but this is all I could find:

“A boy-genius and his comrades travel to different parallel universes, trying to find their way back home.”

That tells the premise of the show but is hardly a description.  I will elaborate.

Quinn Mallory invents sliding and he brings his college professor Maximilian Arturo and his co-worker at the computer store Wade Welles.  He makes the vortex so huge to make sure that all 3 of them can go through but what he doesn’t realize is that he made it too big because it ends up going out of the house and into the street and captures a car with Rembrandt “Crying Man” Brown in the vortex.

Before they leave, Quinn meets his doppelgänger from another dimension who solves the formula for sliding and before he could tell him something important, his vortex sucks him out back to his own world.  That thing he was supposed to tell him was that he should not try to open a vortex before the time is up, otherwise you won’t get back home to your own dimension, you’ll be lost forever.

In that first episode they slide to an dimension where the planet is frozen.  They have to get out of there in a hurry otherwise they will die but that means opening a portal before the time is up which puts them in a different dimension.  They are lost.

They travel to dimension after dimension trying to get back home but end up getting caught up in the drama of the world they slide to.  Every dimension they slide to is the same exact year but the world is never the exact same.  The country might have been taken over by the Germans or the Russians, or in some cases the dinosaurs never went extinct.  There was one episode where California was Texas and even though it was the same year where they still had big buildings and technology, it was the wild west.

In the middle of the 3rd season, Professor Arturo dies and is replaced with a female character.  I understand that Wade leaves the show and is replaced with Quinn’s brother in the 4th season.  I know that they are brothers in real life but they are also brothers in the show.  I’m not exactly sure because I haven’t seen it yet but I’m pretty sure it’s the brother he never had.  Literally, the brother his mother never had but his mother in another dimension.

I also found out that by the end of the 4th season his brother is gone and in the 5th season Jerry O’Connell was replaced by another actor and his brother is replaced by another slider who is a female.  The only person left in the show who was there from the very beginning is Rembrandt.

So I have had a lot of fun watching this show on Hulu.  I had my computer hooked up to the hdtv with an HDMI cable and was watching it with Hulu Desktop.  There are commercials, usually about 5 times in 1 hour and they play 2 commercials so you are interrupted for 1 minute but that is way less time than if you were watching it on tv.  I don’t mind the ads because some of them advertise shows that you can watch on Hulu and they give you a button to click to bookmark the show for later.

I guess Hulu isn’t going to put the 4th and 5th seasons in their website but I found out that Netflix does have them so at some point I’m going to start the Netflix trial so I can watch the final 2 seasons.  I’m looking forward to seeing him and his brother together but without Wade and the professor, it’s kind of depressing to continue to watch it.  And without Jerry O’Connell in the final season I’m not even sure if I want to see it but I still want to see how it is.

I like this show.  I don’t know the reason I never watched this show but when I finally was able to watch it, I didn’t because I hadn’t seen it from the beginning and I don’t like to pick up a show in the middle because I’ll always be lost when they talk about a story line or character they used to know who I never got to see.  So that’s why I never watched it later.  But I’m watching it now so better late than never.

Hulu on My TV

I got my new video card less than 2 weeks ago and I have been having so much fun watching TV with it on my TV.  Yes you heard right.  It has a HDMI cable on it so I have it hooked up to my HDTV to watch Hulu.

I love Hulu but what I absolutely cannot stand about watching tv on my computer is that my computer speakers suck.  They are the speakers that are attached to the monitor and they aren’t great.  I’d rather watch it on my tv with the tv speakers.

I downloaded the Hulu desktop program for my PC so when it plays, its full screen.  I don’t have to worry about making each episode full screen, it does it automatically.  Then I go on to the Hulu website with my netbook and add shows to my queue.  I can do that with the Hulu Desktop program but it’s faster on my netbook.  When I’m done I go into the Hulu Desktop program and refresh the data so it shows all of the new shows in the Queue and just start watching.

So far I have already watched the entire first 4 seasons of The Guild.  I saw the entire first (and only since it was canceled) season of Happy Town.  Yesterday I watched the only 10 episodes of The Mercury Men and 10 episodes of CTRL which both have very short episodes around 6-8 minutes each.  I also watched a show called Gay Town.  It was one of the most hilarious shows I’ve seen.  It also had short episodes.

Last night I started watching Wilfred but it got really late so I only watched the first 4 episodes.  It appears that it only has 8 episodes and the last episode was on August 11th (that was 2 weeks ago) and apparently they are only showing episodes 8 days after they air so I will simply have to wait.  But, considering I have so many shows in my Hulu queue, I have plenty of time to wait.  A friend told me this one was a little twisted, it is and it’s my kind of humor.

I have been adding more and more shows to my queue which means I have many hours to watch.  There are shows that I didn’t know about and shows that I’ve always wanted to watch but never really had the time to or they aired at the same time another show so the schedule was too conflicting so I skipped it.  Whatever the reason I couldn’t see them doesn’t matter anymore because now I can.

I noticed last night that some shows have expiration dates on them so I’m going to have to pick which shows to watch first based on their expiration dates.  Today I’m going to watch the final 4 episodes of Wilfred but then I have to move to the first expiring show Sliders while I have time because it expires at the end of this month.

After Sliders I will watch Flash Forward, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, The Dresden Files and Legend of the Seeker.  Then the rest of the shows I have in my queue have no expiration date so I can watch those at my leisure.  I have (as of this moment) 12 shows with 214 episodes worth of shows to watch.  I am going to be quite busy.

I was going to get Netflix in September to start watching shows that are premium on Hulu because I figured that if I’m going to be paying more money to watch tv I might as well get Netflix because they have more current movies to stream that Hulu doesn’t so that should be fun to be able to watch movies that I missed in the movie theater.  Since I have so many shows in my Hulu Queue, I figure I’m probably going to have to wait until October to start Netflix.

I downloaded Boxee for PC but it doesn’t work as good as the Hulu desktop program.  I was really excited about having Boxee too but it’s not that good.  Maybe it’s that I only have 1GB of memory, I don’t know but when I try to watch a video it either takes forever to start or the video is too choppy.  So I will be taking it off there because it does me no good to keep it on.  Also, I get more out of the Hulu desktop than any of the apps on Boxee.  I’m sure Boxee is good, it’s just not very good on my computer.  Maybe if I had the actual boxee box I might be happier with it.

One show I wanted to watch on the Boxee for PC program is called The Legend of Neil about a guy who was transported into the Legend of Zelda world while he was… well, I won’t say why.  I can’t watch it on Boxee because it’s too choppy.  It is on the Effin Funny website so I can watch it there.

Well I’m off to go watch the rest of Wilfred then start with Sliders.  Have a wonderful weekend, I know I will.

The Guild

I like to call myself a nerd but I guess I can’t really say that I’m that big of a nerd because I waited so long to watch The Guild.  If I had a nerd membership card I’d probably be asked to surrender it.  Well, I just watched the entire series so maybe if I had one it could get reinstated.  Oh whew, that makes me feel so much better.  Having been reinstated and all.  Wait… did that just happen?

I’ve heard of The Guild and I’ve wanted to watch for such a long time but the thing is, I really don’t like watching tv shows on my computer.  I mean, the sound issues alone are enough for me to shy away from it not to mention that I’d have to sit still, I’m kind of a spaz.  But I really enjoyed watching it regardless.

How I actually started watching it is a funny story.  Thinking of the Roku player I decided that since my Chromebook could plug in to my TV I would use that as my Roku player.  The Chrome store has tv apps so I thought I would browse the Google Chrome store looking for some tv apps to install and found Clicker.tv.  I installed it then signed in and guess what was in my queue?  The guild!  So that is what made me decide to watch it.

I started watching it but it wasn’t loading properly.  That first episode had a link to watch it somewhere else.  Bing and Blip.tv so I watched the first episode on Bing.  But then I had to go back to Clicker to choose the next video and I thought there had to be a better way so I wouldn’t have to click anything, just sit back and watch it load the next episode automatically.  So I chose Blip to watch it.  I only watched the first 2 seasons through that.  I decided to check Hulu and there it was so I watched the 3rd and 4th season there.

I think it was much better on Hulu though but that’s just me.  All I had to do was add those 2 seasons to my queue and just play it from there and it played one episode after the next.  Then again Blip had more extras which I enjoyed watching.  Hulu doesn’t have those extras so I’ll have to go back to Blip to watch the season 3 and 4 extras.

Last night I watched the first half of the 3rd season in the kitchen while making dinner then this morning watched the 2nd half and all of season 4.

Well, now if anyone asks I can say that not only did I watch it but after 2 days I am addicted.  So good for me… I think.

I can’t wait for the next season, and I know there is going to be one because I saw Felicia Day talking about it on Attack of the Show.  They were at a set which I did not see in any of the 4 seasons that I watched.  So I know there is a future of the show.  I can’t wait to see it.  I will definitely add that to my tv page lol.

Update: Once again I failed to do my research until after I hit the publish button but I went to the official guild website and found that not only do they have extras but they also have the first episode of season 5 available. So… watch the guild on their official website.

Update: Felicia Day is on Attack of the Show today, August, 1 2011 talking about her new web series called Dragon Age of Redemption.  I believe that is a new series where she is in the set that I referred to and has nothing to do with The Guild.  I seem to recall her wearing elf ears in that scene which she wears in this new web series.

We Are Officially Switching Our Cable

Now didn’t I tell you the other day that we were thinking about switching to the Roku player for watching TV instead of paying our cable company $110 every month? Well, it’s official. We bought our Roku boxes this morning at 10am. And since I bought it before 11am it’s going to be shipped out today and we should get it next week. They said it should take 3-7 days but the confirmation email included an address which I google mapped and they are only 4 1/2 hours from our house. I’m expecting it to be here by Monday.

Our cable cycle begins on January 6th and ends on February 5th according to the cable bill I got in the mail today. That means if we cancel our cable before Thursday of next week then when we cancel it we won’t have to worry about any new charges. I’ll be free and clear.

Ok so I’ve already been adding shows to my favorites on the Hulu website so whenever a show has a new episode then it will automatically go into my queue. I don’t know how queues work with Hulu on the Roku but I hopefully won’t have to do much searching when my shows come back on, just play my queue.

We got a code for a free month of Hulu Plus which I won’t do anything about until the Roku box actually comes. I wouldn’t want to waste a few days of Hulu, besides, I want my monthly payments to start AFTER I get my monthly checks, not before.

Even though I’m kind of PO’d that I’m going to be missing some of my shows, I’m still really excited about saving money every month. I mean, I have wanted BBC America, Logo and G4 for years and never had them until last year when we finally got HD and got the new channels. Well, it turns out that even though I have those channels now, I hardly ever watch them.

The shows that I’m going to miss on G4 are Attack of the show and Web Soup which aren’t really on Hulu. I mean they are but only clips. I can live with that I guess.

The shows that I’m going to miss on BBC America are Being Human, Doctor Who and The Graham Norton Show. As far as I know those aren’t on Hulu at all. I know Doctor Who is on Netflix but I might have to wait just a little bit longer for the new episodes to come.

I didn’t mention HBO but there is a show that I will definitely be missing and that is True Blood. That’s one of my favorites and I will definitely be missing it but it is on Netflix. Of course I will miss seeing it when it’s on, I can certainly wait until it’s on Netflix. Or just find a friend who still has HBO and watch it over there lol.

I’ve been telling everyone about this because I think it is so cool to get Hulu and Netflix and watch all of my shows without paying high cable prices. I just have to wait for them to show up in my Queue.

I have mentioned that not all of my shows are going to be on there but I’m not too worried because those shows are on their networks websites. Like CW, I’m going to be missing Smallville, Supernatural and Vampire Diaries. Well, luckily they are on the CW website. And I just started watching Glory Daze on TBS, well that is also on the TBS website. So, I won’t really be missing anything, I just can’t watch them on my TV that’s all.

So, until I get my box then..

Cirque du Freak

(This is not a book review)

I have wanted to see this movie since it was first released in theaters but since one us in the house doesn’t like horror, the other (me) never gets to see it until it’s either on DVD, HBO or Showtime. Although, I still have yet to rent it from the Red Box at the grocery store. I seriously don’t know why I haven’t seen it yet. But right now at this very moment as I sit here typing this out, I’m glad I haven’t seen it yet.

This morning I wanted to start reading a book and I had chosen to start reading the 2nd book of the Belgariad but then I decided it wasn’t going to fit with the theme of this very day, Halloween. I mean sure it has witches and lots of magic but is it Halloween worthy? I think not. I have a queue of books that I want to buy and read and so I searched through the queue and remembered Cirque du Freak.

I got on the Nook store and found the first book for $1.99 for the e-book version. Perfect! I don’t have that much money in the bank for another few days but I have just enough that if I could buy a few of these volumes at $2 each. But I only bought the first one which is called Living Nightmare.

I started reading it after breakfast. It has fewer pages than the paperback version does as mostly all ebooks do but it also had way less than my regular books do. I can usually read 50 pages of a book which probably equals out to 75-100 regular paper back book pages and since this one was 149 pages, I thought, this is going to take 3 days, no problem. If I read half of it then I can shorten it to 2 days no biggy. But, after the live Ghost Hunters investigation was over I figured I’d at least give it a shot and see if I couldn’t just finish this book. And you know what? I did.

The story reeled me in, hook line and sinker. Whatever that means, some fishing term I don’t know. Anyway I was immediately hooked.

Here I am typing this out so late at night after spending so many hours reading, my eyes are tired and blurry and I’m having to squint to read, closing one eye making it easier lol. But I want to make my point before I go to bed and forget about it in the morning.

It was the most awesome $2 book I have ever taken a full day to read. Actually, it’s the first book that has taken me a full day to read. I love it and I can’t wait for the next one.

I wonder though, should I just go ahead and rent the movie or read the next book tomorrow and can I read the whole thing tomorrow like I read today? And is this a new trend for me? Reading these books one a day? How many are there? Do I need to read the entire series before seeing the movie?

Ok I’m too tired for all these questions since it’s 1:30am. I need to rest my eyes. I just wanted to let it be known that my dyslexia, ADD and learning disability didn’t prevent me from getting through this book, well, it was touch and go but other than that it was pretty easy to read and that is the kind of book I like.

I will start with part 2 tomorrow and hopefully the DVD will either be at the red box tomorrow or I can go into the HBO or Showtime on Demand and find it. I like to watch the movie first, it makes voices in my head for each characters easier so I cam impersonate their accents easier.

To be continued…

Google Queues

I don’t know if I am just very late to the game but thanks to reading the PC Mag on my new Nook, I am a little bit more educated than I was before I got it.

I read an article in the PC Mag about a new (or is it new?) thing from Google called Gpanion which is very handy. It’ basically has these app icons (like apple iPhone apps) that open a website for certain google websites. Like your email, calendar, youtube, maps… etc.

One of those things in there is called GQueue. What that is, is if you have a ton of things that you need to get done you type them out with a date that it needs to be completed by and as you get that item done you check it and that item disappears forever. Be careful you don’t prematurely uncheckulate it because it is a disappointment when you have to reenter the monster back in.

I am not ashamed to show mine here. It’s not showing up in my screen so I’ll see what happens when I publish this post. But it should show you a list of the books I have in my queue. I have not bought all of them whether I said so or not but that list is only 1/4 filled. I decided I would finish it later since I have to get to bed.

Which reminds me, tootles. Goodnight. See ya’ll in the morn when I try to finish it.

Night Mare

I’m having a nightmare, or really, I’m about to start reading Night Mare, the 6th installment in the Xanth series by Piers Anthony.

This next book begins with a character that was in the previous book, Ogre, Ogre.  Mare Imbrium along with 2 other night mares rode the trio out of the Void and took her payment of a half soul.  Here is the synopsis from the back of the book.

“The Nextwave of barbarian warriors was invading Xanth from the north, ravaging and destroying as they advanced. But Mare Imbrium had her own problems. Ever since she had gained the half soul, the night mare had begun to mishandle her job of delivering bad dreams. Now the Night Stallion dismissed her, exiling her to the day world with a message for King Trent: “Beware the Horseman!” She had no idea of what that meant. But that was the way with prophetic warnings, nobody could understand them until it was too late. Then she met the Horseman. And she discovered that one who would ride a night mare was a master of bit and spur, and not a man to surrender her. For the night mare, it began to be all a horrible nightmare!”

When I read the previous Xanth books, I read them little by little over time, some days I only read 1 chapter per day and other days I skipped reading.  I was into the books but not that much apparently because they made me sleepy.  But when I read Ogre, Ogre I was able to commit myself to reading more than 1 chapter per day.  In fact, I read the first chapter maybe in February then gave up until recently when I read the entire book in 3 days.

If I can read the entire book in 3 days then I have a feeling that maybe I can read half of the next book today and the other half tomorrow.

I only have 4 more Xanth novels in my queue, although there are 32 available for sale, I don’t own any of them so they are not all in my book queue.  I do plan on buying more but for now I have other books to read.

If you have not read the Xanth novels you are missing out on some great adventures.

My Day in Xanth

I spent the day with an ogre and his 7 female companions.

That sounded silly but it’s true.  I sat in my desk chair the entire day reading Ogre, Ogre by Piers Anthony which is the 5th book in the Xanth series.

Earlier this year I committed to starting this book but only read 1 chapter and stopped.  A couple of days ago I finally picked it back up and started reading it again.  I only read 2 chapters then yesterday 3 chapters but today I really got into it and read 5 chapters.  The only reason I stopped reading it was because I had shows on tonight.

What I have left to read of the rest of the book is actually the same amount that I read today.  Actually it’s only 4 chapters but the amount of pages is the same.  I am so tempted to read another chapter tonight but I want to save the rest for tomorrow.

I love the Xanth books because they draw me into the adventure and I don’t want to leave.  I can picture everything that is happening as I’m reading and I can imagine what it would look like if it were a CGI movie.  Although it would be a very long movie but it would be well worth the watch if it were made .

In this story, the Ogre named Smash goes on a trip with a Nymph and despite the fact that being an ogre he eats women, he has made a promise to safely guide her through the very dangerous land of Xanth to help her find what she is looking for.  Along they way he helps 6 other women.

Yesterday as I was reading he was collecting the women and today chapter by chapter most of the women found their mates and the end of their adventures. The point that I’m at he still has 3 more women although I have a feeling one of those women has found her mate and the end of her adventure since she has found the male of her species.

Tomorrow when I finish this book I can finally check another book off my queue then add “Night Mare” which is the 6th Xanth novel.

Reading isn’t as exciting to everyone and who blogs about reading a book but I find it an accomplishment since I have Dyslexia, LD and ADD.  I also find that reading helps me with my writing.  It broadens my vocabulary and helps teach me good grammar, if that makes any sense.

You can see my aNobii profile which shows the books I have read and have yet to read but I will get to eventually.  I want to finish all the physical books before I get to the eBooks then I have a reason to buy a Nook.

United States of Tara

There is this new show on Showtime called United States of Tara about this woman who suffers from Multiple Personalities Disorder (but she says it has been reclassified as DID (Dissociative identity disorder).

Unfortunately I didn’t start watching this show when it began because I didn’t see the commercials for it.  I usually only watch Showtime when Big Brother is on or Secret Diary of a Call Girl (notice my title?  hehe).

I was bored so I went to Showtime On Demand to see what I can watch and I was going through the shows and found it and was glad they have it from episode 1.  It’s pretty good.  Her personalities are really funny lol.

The first episode showed her teenager personality “T” who gets high and tries to sleep with Tara’s husband, who wouldn’t?  It’s John Corbett.  Then there was the redneck guy “Buck” with his giant glasses, Larry the Cable Guy type shirt, trucker cap with the missing penis which got blown off in Vietnam lol.  I guess when your penis gets blown off in nam you grow breasts?  Then there is the homemaker “Alice” who looks like June Cleaver and she bakes and tries to have sex with Tara’s husband lol.

I was glad to see Andrew Lawrence (Joey Lawrence’s little brother) but unfortunately he’s a church going homophobe.  Tara’s son Marshall is gay and he likes Andy’s character but apparently he’s not gay.  That I know of.  I think he might be in the closet because his father is the pastor of the church.

I like this show, it’s progressive.  The kids are allowed to say every word in the book and the parent’s don’t even flinch when the 12-year-old son says the F word.  It’s a pretty good show.  I’m only on episode 4 and there are 6 in total so I’m gonna go back to it.

I’ve watched all 6 episodes so far as well as all the bonus interviews and I’m happy to add this to my queue of shows that I watch.  Since it is available on Showtime On Demand if I miss an episode and don’t catch the repeat then I can watch it on demand.  I look forward to see what happens with Marshall and Andy Lawrence’s character, to see if he really is gay and if they become a couple or not.  I mean, the son is really young.  He looks 12 to me but he could be 14 for all I know.  And there is nothing wrong with a 12 or 14-year-old having a boyfriend.

Oh that’s another thing, that he’s gay and both his parents are perfectly cool with it.  That hits a chord with me because I grew up with homophobic parents who ended up kicking me out of the house because I was gay at 17.  I’d give up my parent’s for progressive parents even if one of them dresses like a dude, teenage girl and June Cleaver.

Edit: I looked up the son Marshall on IMDB and apparently in real life the actor is 16.  So my theory of the character being 12 might be wrong hehe.  It would make more sense though that the 16-year-old son is in love with his 16-year-old classmate.  Assuming Andy’s character is 16 and not a 21-year-old who got held back a lot lol.  So much for no child will be left behind eh?
