I FOUND My Brother

I cannot believe it, but I found my brother.

After I did the 23andMe and didn’t really find any useful information about my family, I decided to go to Ancestry and figure out how to populate my family tree. I started out with my mother’s side of the family, then with the help of a friend we narrowed down who my father was to one man who was born with his name in California in the 1940’s, and I actually found my father, but I wasn’t sure it was him. I discovered from a document that he had a son, so I went on a search for him, and contacted many people with his name on Facebook, that didn’t pan out. So I went to Google and a website called MyLife had information, including his name and birth date, age, and where he lived in the 90’s and it had an email address, so I emailed him.

After I emailed him I finally got a response from someone on Ancestry who told me that I had the right family, as you can see from my previous post I FOUND My Paternal Family. They didn’t know where my brother was, so I continued to wait for him to respond to my email, and a couple of days ago he finally responded.

My brother said in his reply email that the picture was small, but it did resemble his father, so we connected on Facebook and he was convinced that someone was trying to scam him or steal his identity, and who can blame him? I mean, there are so many scams out there, you literally can’t trust anyone. He wanted me to convince him before he would even talk to me, and I guess I did convince him because he acknowledges that I am his brother. I’m not going to ask him to take a DNA test, although I did take a DNA test with Ancestry and with 23andMe, so if he wants to be 100% sure, I will pay for the test, but I don’t think he will worry about it, but I will still ask him if he wants one.

Anyway, so we have talked with each other yesterday and today and he lives in Germany, so I can only talk with him from 8 am my time until 12 pm my time because he’s 9 hours ahead of me. I am very sad that we couldn’t be closer, but who knows, maybe one day I will be able to visit him in Germany. I’ve always wanted to go there, so maybe it will happen one of these days. But for now we will use Skype to communicate. It’s free and it’s not text, it’s a phone call where we can see each other. There might be a delay, but we will figure that out.

I am absolutely over the moon. Not only did I not know I had a brother, but I found him. I just can’t ask for anything more. I feel like I have accomplished my goal of finding my father, even though he has passed from this life. I feel like my brother and also the discovery of cousins and aunts and uncles is a bonus. I spent most of my life looking for one person, and I found many. I couldn’t be more happy. My search is finally over.

Getting Ready for the Holidays

This is the image from my webcam to show my progress so far. It’s very hard to really tell what it is at this point because of the angle of the image but it’s a Christmas stocking for one of my relatives. It’s a snowman holding a broom with a mouse in it. The snowman is wearing a top hat and a scarf and he has a squirrel on his shoulder.

There is a deer which you can clearly see then a rabbit next to him but I haven’t finished him so he’s hard to see.  Then to the bottom right of the stocking is a fox which I haven’t even started. Well, I started his feet but that’s it.

When I finish I will post the finished product so you can get a better image. Yesterday I worked on the white of the snowman stomach and I started his scarf which by the way is not an easy thing to do lol.

I have 9 more days to finish this. Do you think I can do it? I keep saying “Oh it’ll only take me a few days” well it’s been a week that I’ve been working on it but because of back problems I can only work on so much of it at a time before I have to stop. Yesterday I drank a red bull and got a lot more done but not as much as I would have liked.

I still have to finish the other stocking that I made for Jordan with the Santa on the front. Since that one didn’t come with the red felt for the back, I had to go buy some at Michael’s. I cut the piece out so all I have to do is sew it on. But I’ll wait to do that when I can sew this one up at the same time. Yes they have to be sewn by hand because if I use the sewing machine it will screw up the pattern because some of the pattern is right against the edge of where I have to sew.

You know speaking of sewing, I wish that I knew how to quilt because I think I could make some awesome Christmas stockings with that. That would be so awesome.

Anyway, I need to get back to work lol.

Bridezillas

I was just watching Bridezillas on WE.  Why?  Don’t ask.  But omg these women are either classless or nuts.  This one woman couldn’t stop yelling at everyone.  If she could only see herself.  One of the things she said was “this isn’t his wedding, it’s my wedding”.  LOL ok.  If I was the guy getting married to her I would’ve told her to get married by herself because this isn’t just her day, it’s his day too.

Frankly I don’t see why people are in such a hurry to get married and why it’s such a big deal that they have to spend thousands upon thousands of dollars that they don’t really have.  You could just have a simple wedding at home or at a relatives house who has a large back yard where you can just buy groceries and cook a buffet meal and bake your own cake.  And why spend thousands of dollars on a wedding dress you are only going to wear once.  Just get a nice wedding dress that is under a hundred that you can actually afford.

A lot of people can’t get married you know so I think that they should think about how lucky they are that their wedding is actually acceptable to society before they act so high and mighty about being in such a hurry to get married.  I don’t know the numbers but a lot of marriages end in divorce, especially the rushed ones.

Skype Vs. Vonage

I’ve been seeing these commercials for Vonage constantly on tv about how they are better than the telephone company because they only charge you $30 per month and you use your current internet connection to connect to your phone service.

What about Skype?  Skype has phone service that works with your WiFi connection and it’s only $2.95 a month.  Since it works with your WiFi connection at home you can also use it at WiFi hotspots like the cloud (whatever that is) and t-mobile hotspots. They have a USB phone, 2 WiFi phones, even a video phone. You can call anyone who uses Skype for free if you only want to call other Skype users.  Or you can also call landlines and cell phones for $2.95 per month.  You get a phone number that only costs $30 per year.  Their best phone is the black WiFi phone that is on sale right now for $129.99.

They have a phone that is currently only in europe right now that uses the 3G network but I guess you can use it like a cell phone because you can make a call anywhere, you aren’t limited to WiFi hotspots like the ones I just talked about in the above paragraph.  I look forward to that coming to the states.

Right now I use Skype on my PSP to make phone calls.  I don’t have a phone number for it but I do have the option and since I am signed up with their unlimited calls to US and Canada they have given me a $30 coupon for a phone number for 1 year.  I don’t want to use it for my PSP because I won’t have it turned on long enough to receive phone calls.

Personally, if I had to choose between Vonage and Skype, I’d choose Skype, especially if I was on a budget.  Also I can take my Skype WiFi phone with me wherever I go because it will work wherever there is a hotspot like Starbucks, McDonald’s, Hotels, Airports, your friends and relatives houses etc.  With Vonage you are limited to only being able to use it at home.

Edit:  Ok I was looking at the Skype phone on their website and was watching a video (take a tour) and it was saying “for just pennies a minute”.  So maybe you have to do the Skype as you go or I don’t know, maybe it works with the monthly subscription.  The only way to know for sure is to get the service and find out I guess.  Skype as you go gives you a bit more freedom to be able to call other countries if you have to call people who are in another country and you only pay a few cents to about 20 cents a minute depending where you are calling.
