Star Trek Corner to Corner Pixel Crochet Blanket from Two Magic Pixels

Well, I’ve chosen a pattern, bought the pattern and then bought the yarn. The yarn will be here later next week.

I decided to use blue yarn instead of purple because I wanted to use the color of one of the uniforms. At first I was going to use red, but then I looked at the color and realized it’s probably going to hurt my eyes. Also, there’s that whole red uniform always getting killed on alien planets thing in TOS, so perhaps blue is the logical choice.

When I made the Betty boop 007 blanket, I had posted some videos on YouTube of the blanket as I was still making it and then eventually I made another video after it had already been finished. Many people asked me to make a tutorial on how to do Corner to Corner crochet and I tried making a video and I just wasn’t focused enough. I just decided to tell people to just go find the video that I used to learn how to make a corner to corner crochet project. But I think that when I get the yarn and I start working on it, I might just try to make a tutorial and see if I can finish the tutorial. It will take me probably a few weeks to make the blanket, so it’ll be awhile before the video is completed. But I will try to do it.

I went into the listing for this particular pattern and it says that the pattern is 100 squares wide by 100 squares high and that translates to 100 inches by 100 inches. The Betty boop blanket was 80 squares wide by 120 squares high. So this blanket will be a perfect square. The G hook is my go-to hook, but if the stitches are too tight, I might use an H hook. That will determine the size of the blanket in inches.

Let me know what you think about the pattern that I chose as well as the colors. I chose Star Trek because I seem to be on a bit of a Star Trek binge. I’ve been watching Star Trek Strange New Worlds and I just decided that I wanted to catch up on the original series which I don’t really remember that much from childhood. I’ve also been watching Star Trek Discovery, Star Trek Lower Decks, I’m going to be watching The Next Generation again and of course Deep Space Nine and Voyager. I have also been watching the movies again. I’m literally in the Star Trek world right now, so this makes perfect sense that I would want to make this blanket.

I am going to say that it is a bit hot right now and I’m not quite sure I want to be crocheting anything that’s going to make me sweat, especially since I will probably have to rest it on my legs as I crochet and that will heat me up a bit much. But I would like to work on it before it gets cold when I actually need to use it. I will update this when I start working on it.

Anton Yelchin

June 19th, 2016 was Father’s Day, but it was also one of the most difficult days for me particularly because one of my favorite actors passed away at his home. This is the story according to most news websites.

yelchin crash 876“According to police, Yelchin died from blunt force asphyxia when he got out of the vehicle and it rolled down his driveway and pinned him against a brick mailbox and a security fence. His 2015 Grand Cherokee featured an uncommon type of electronic gear selector that works like a self-centering toggle to cycle through the transmission’s modes (park, reverse, neutral and drive,) rather than a lever with notches or specific positions for each.”

We had family visiting us from San Diego, and it wasn’t until after they left that I saw the news on Facebook. My heart sank in my chest and I just started saying “No no no no no no this isn’t happening. No! Just NO!” I read the article and about how he passed away, but I just couldn’t wrap myself around the details, and I kind of think that I was in denial. I went directly to Netflix and watched Odd Thomas because that’s one of my favorite movies. I started crying as soon as I heard his voice, and then again when I saw his face. I tried to keep calm throughout the movie, but I couldn’t help it, I just kept crying. At the end when he realizes his girlfriend is dead, and he starts crying, I just lost it. Netflix doesn’t have my other favorite movie of his, which is Fright Night and the new Star Trek movies. I would like to watch those again just to see him.

I don’t know what he was like in person because I’ve never met him and I haven’t seen him on camera in a reality setting. I haven’t seen many interviews with him, I’ve only seen him in his movies. I would imagine him to be one of the kindest people you’ve ever met. He just gives that vibe to me. I’ve seen his body language in pictures, and he doesn’t seem like his head ever got too big from the fame, so that tells me that he is a really down to earth person. He was a very talented actor, and I was looking forward to so many more movies and hopefully TV shows, but that’s not going to come anymore. I’m sure he had acted in some movies that are still sitting in the editor’s office, so I look forward to losing my shit when I see those movies. Face it, you know if there are any movies coming in the future with him in it, you’re gonna bawl your face off at the movie theater right next to me. I can’t be bawling in the movie theater by myself!

This world has lost one of the greatest talents it will ever see. I am still mourning his passing as if I knew him personally. I don’t know what it was about him, he just touched me, and I will never forget him.

I love you Anton Yelchin. Rest in peace buddy.

Could the Star Trek comm badge become a reality?

tng comm badges

I saw a picture on Facebook today of the Starship Enterprise from the original series, but it was all made of Christmas lights.  That got me thinking about comm badges.  I consider myself to be a nerd, but I don’t have a Star Trek uniform or a comm badge, so perhaps I should either buy one, or turn in my nerd membership card.

As I was browsing Google, it came to me.  I wonder if they make a Bluetooth enabled comm badge that looks exactly like the Star Trek comm badge that actually works with your phone.  Most phones now have voice recognition right?  So I wonder if they have made a comm badge that when you tap it, you can say “Call Aunt Louise” and it places the call.

comm badge

Guess what… I found it!  It’s not exactly what I had in mind, but it is a step in the right direction.  This is called “CommBadge” and it works with your iPhone and Android phone using BlueTooth technology.  It isn’t in the shape I was hoping, but how can I expect them to legally use that licensed design without incurring lawsuits?

This is a start up company, so they don’t actually sell these yet, but if they can get their funding with Indie GoGo, then they will be able to make and sell these and perhaps every person in the world will have one.  They have 10 days as of this posting and have only raised $18k of $100k, so unless people help them out, we will probably never see this awesome design.

May I convince you?  They have several different models.  One without anything that just has the regular features, then they have others that have a badge holder for work and one that has the retractable badge holder for perhaps those who need to swipe their badge.  It all does the same thing whether you have the badge holder or not and that is almost exactly what you think the Star Trek comm badge would do.

You press the button (the speaker) and you hear that iPhone Siri ding ding sound and you tell it what you want and it responds without you ever having to take your phone out of your pocket.  Android has something similar to Siri, but they don’t show that in the video (below).  You can tap the CommBadge and say “Call Sally” and it will dial her number and you and everyone else around you can hear Sally answer the phone and talk and you can talk back to her.  I assume when the conversation is over you hang up by pressing the button again.

What is more exciting is that you can chat with your phone just like you normally do.  Like my partner likes to talk to his iPhone to text people.  He will say “Text Mike” and then he will say what he wants to tell me and the words spell out on the screen.  I assume it would do the same thing, without you having to look at it.  Of course Siri’s voice recognition software isn’t exact every time so there might be some confusion when I receive the actual text, but I won’t know until this thing ever comes out.

I am also assuming that you can get directions too, but I don’t think Siri will tell you to go here and turn there and get you to your destination just by using the CommBadge.  I have tried it by looking at the phone and there weren’t any turn by turn directions from Siri, I had to actually look at the screen.  But that would be cool if she gave you a heads up while you were driving without looking.

Anyway, here’s the video, perhaps if you like it you might want to help their cause to get this thing started.  I’m sure whatever you donate, you will get that product if and when they launch it.  I think it’s awesome and I would help if I had the money, but it’s Christmas.  How do they expect people to have money this month?  I mean seriously lol.

Tell me what you think.  Would you use this?  If I had an android phone, I certainly would.

I finally got to watch Battlestar Galactica

I like to consider myself a science fiction nerd because I like shows like Star Trek and movies like Star Wars.  I actually love anything space related, but I don’t always get to watch them because if I miss even one episode, I feel like I am lost so I just wait until I can watch the series at a later date.

Battlestar Galactica originally aired on the SyFy channel (Sci-Fi back then) from 2004 until 2009 and I missed every episode.  I think the reason I missed it from the beginning was because I just didn’t think I would like it.  Also, if I have a show on the same day at the same time, I’ll watch the one that I was already addicted to and skip everything else.

I got a second chance to see the show from the beginning when BBC America announced that they were going to start showing it every Saturday night and I took advantage of it and I am so glad that I did.  They started out with 2 episodes at 7pm.  Our BBC America HD channel is from the eastern time zone so I got to watch it three hours earlier.  If I missed the episode then I had a second chance to watch it on the non HD channel at 7.

I kick myself in the head for not watching this show when it originally aired because it was such a good show.  I guess it doesn’t really matter that I missed it when it was on because now I have seen every episode from all four seasons.  I feel like I am better educated when it comes to science fiction television so when I am asked a question I will be able to respond with a semi-intelligent response, maybe, probably not.

Hulu has all four seasons of this show, but you have to pay to watch them so that is why I watched it on BBC America.  I also don’t like to watch 8 episodes of a show per day because that is just way too much information for me to take in all at once.  I feel like if I watch too many episodes in one day that I might not remember what happened before, if that makes any sense at all.

Hulu has Caprica too and I could have watched it months ago when they had the full season, but I wanted to watch BSG before I got into that so that I wouldn’t be confused, but apparently they aren’t even in the same timeline so it didn’t matter.  Now they only have 5 out of 18 episodes available.  I don’t see BBC America airing this so I will probably be forced to get Netflix just to watch it.  I really don’t mind, I just want to see it now.

The only thing that I regret about not watching this show when it aired was that I didn’t have anyone to talk to after every episode.  It’s cool to talk to someone about what happened and to get different perspectives and opinions on what we just saw.  Oh well, maybe next time, well, you know, with another show.

Oh well, I look forward to watching Caprica when I get Netflix.  I would love it if they came out with another BSG related show or a facsimile because I am in love with space dramas like BSG, Farscape, Star Trek etc.

Hypospray Is Reality

Needle-free injection systems takes a cue from air bags – from Dvice.com

This is awesome.  They finally have the Star Trek hypospray.  I don’t know what took them so long.  This will be great for diabetics who don’t really like sticking themselves everyday to get their insulin injections.

The days of sharing needles for drug users will be over too, that is if they can get one of these.  I’m not promoting it, just saying that there won’t be the risk of contamination of needles and exposing people to the AIDS virus.

Bikini Christmas in July – Minisode Network

Hey, awhile ago I commented on a Gidget video on the Minisode Network channel over on YouTube.  It was the episode called Gidget’s Foreign Policy starring Walter Koenig (Chekov from Star Trek) and I made a comment saying Chekov spanking a girl awesomeness or something like that.  Well, in this video they show my name but they put stars on my comment lol.  Anyway, I thought it was cool that they have my name Xanapus in this video at 3:40.

ChessMaster Game for PSP

I bought this game yesterday but only did the tutorial which was more of a lesson, telling you how each piece moves.  It was a lot to take in all at once.  Today I tried a practice game but I was stumped.  I didn’t really know what to do.  If you press the button with the square on it then it gives you a hint to show you where to go.  I kept losing so I started using the hints and I would’ve never even thought to do the moves that it was suggesting and after about 15 minutes I still lost lol.

Chess really is a game that you need a giant brain to play.  I don’t know how the people on Big Brother are able to wrap their brain around it because some of them aren’t very bright lol.  Apparently they are smarter than I am lol.  Unless they are just winging it to pass the time.  That’s my guess.

The whole reason I’ve been wanting to buy this game was so I could learn so I would have a reason to build that gothic chess set but I do realize that it would cost me at least $300 to build it.  It’s not really that worth it lol.  Oh well.

Edit: I calculated the cost of all the molds for making this gothic chess set.  It’s $199 just for the molds.  Then the chess pieces total to $57.42 and the pawns are $54.96.  Total for all of that is $311.38.  That doesn’t even include shipping and the expensive cement that you mix to pour into the molds, the glue and the paint.  I bet you are looking at probably over $400 to make the gothic chess set.  LOL Way too much money.  You have to be really dedicated to chess to want to make this.

2 New PSP Games

Ok well earlier I said we were going to service the cooler then go to the mall to see Star Trek, then back to the mall to get games from Game Stop then probably eat.  Well, 2 out of 4 ain’t bad right?

We serviced the cooler and the tenants didn’t even bother to turn it on and left their a/c units running lol.

We went to the mall and it was packed tighter than my package in bicycle shorts.  We finally found a spot then went in and I come out with 2 used games.  Actually 1 was new but it was on special clearance for $9.99.  “Chess master The Art of Learning”  The other one is called “Dungeon Maker 2: The Hidden War”.

I’ve wanted the chess master game forever to learn how to play that stupid game since everyone who is 5 years old that can play better than me.  Anyway, so now this gives me the opportunity to learn and maybe teach chip then we can get a chess set to play with.

I actually want to make one.  I’ve wanted to make this since I first saw it.  Here is the link for it: The Gothic Chess Set. I think that would be so much fun to make and the chess pieces are going to be so awesome.  EXPENSIVE but awesome lol.

Cooler, Movies, Mall, Video Games…

We got our day planned out.  First we gotta go borrow the ladder from the store next door to our house so we can service the tenants cooler, well, I’ll be changing the cooler pads while Darrin is cleaning the cooler on the ladder.  I hate heights.

Then we’re gonna go to the mall and go see the new Star Trek movie.  Then when that’s over we’re probably going to go back to the mall to eat.

The most important thing is that I got a $25 Game Stop card so I’m going to pick out 2 used games.  I’m sure it will go over, that’s ok, I’ll just pay the difference.

I hope I get 2 good games.  Since there are 2 game stops in the mall I’m probably going to have to look in 1 to see what they have then go to the other to see what they have before I make my final decision.  It’s a process lol.
