Night Mare

I’m having a nightmare, or really, I’m about to start reading Night Mare, the 6th installment in the Xanth series by Piers Anthony.

This next book begins with a character that was in the previous book, Ogre, Ogre.  Mare Imbrium along with 2 other night mares rode the trio out of the Void and took her payment of a half soul.  Here is the synopsis from the back of the book.

“The Nextwave of barbarian warriors was invading Xanth from the north, ravaging and destroying as they advanced. But Mare Imbrium had her own problems. Ever since she had gained the half soul, the night mare had begun to mishandle her job of delivering bad dreams. Now the Night Stallion dismissed her, exiling her to the day world with a message for King Trent: “Beware the Horseman!” She had no idea of what that meant. But that was the way with prophetic warnings, nobody could understand them until it was too late. Then she met the Horseman. And she discovered that one who would ride a night mare was a master of bit and spur, and not a man to surrender her. For the night mare, it began to be all a horrible nightmare!”

When I read the previous Xanth books, I read them little by little over time, some days I only read 1 chapter per day and other days I skipped reading.  I was into the books but not that much apparently because they made me sleepy.  But when I read Ogre, Ogre I was able to commit myself to reading more than 1 chapter per day.  In fact, I read the first chapter maybe in February then gave up until recently when I read the entire book in 3 days.

If I can read the entire book in 3 days then I have a feeling that maybe I can read half of the next book today and the other half tomorrow.

I only have 4 more Xanth novels in my queue, although there are 32 available for sale, I don’t own any of them so they are not all in my book queue.  I do plan on buying more but for now I have other books to read.

If you have not read the Xanth novels you are missing out on some great adventures.

Does Reading Cause Body Odor?

This morning I woke up, had breakfast, got in the shower then went about my day. I got on the computer, read email, did some work then had some free time to read the rest of my book “Ogre, Ogre”. That was the bulk of my activity.

When I went to watch some TV, I noticed some odd odor. I smelled my armpit and it was awful. I wouldn’t normally talk about my body odor but in this case it was unusual and unexpected and I didn’t know why it was happening so I did some research on why.

Apparently body odor is not caused by sweat alone. Everyone has these bacteria that live in certain body parts like the scalp, feet, groin and underarms. According to this site “The odor is mainly caused when the bacteria, growing on skin decomposes the sweat .” Well, I didn’t sweat and as I stated I had just taken a shower and used Degree deodorant which normally blocks any and all odors.

Here is a quote:

“While the eccrine glands are found all over the body, the apocrine glands are found in high concentration in the underarms and groins as well as in the glands. These apocrine glands are mainly stimulated by the worries, fear and tension. It is the secretion from apocrine gland which is generally decomposed by the bacteria and consequently it results in unpleasant body odor. There are several anaerobic bacteria like micrococci and coryne bacteria that decompose the odorless sweat to produce an unpleasant odor.”

You know that the saying “you learn something new every day” still rings true. I did not know that “worries, fear and tension” would ever be the reason I have underarm odor. I always thought that came from sweating.

But what was causing me to worry? The only thing I can think of is that this book was causing me to have more emotions than normal. Meaning I was so enthralled in the book that it was causing worries, fear and tension. I was fearful when Smash the Ogre was fighting the other ogres and when he was fighting the demon and that was also causing some tension. I don’t necessarily think I had fear because I know that every book ends happily ever after so I knew they would be fine.

You know now that I think about it, when I was reading all 7 Harry Potter books, at the end of the day I wreaked to high heaven and had to take showers when I finished reading. I never even thought about why. Now I know.

Maybe if I continue reading I’m going to have to buy some more Degree in bulk. Maybe they might come out with a Degree for readers instead of just Degree for Sports.

No Zombie Book For Me

On June 30th I got an email from GetGlue saying I won a book for being the guru of the book Zombies for Zombies .  Well the book that I won “ The Living Dead” by George Romero is apparently not really happening.

I haven’t really been that focused on getting it on a certain day or week because I know when you win things it could take a month or longer.  But since it has been over 3 weeks I thought maybe it might come soon.  I waited for the mail like a little pup but once again, no book.

I decided to go onto Amazon and get more information about the book, maybe read some reviews.  What I see is confusing because it says that this book is available for pre-order and that it has not been released yet. Hmmm , ok well I go down and see in the product details that it was released on July 1st 2010.  Well that’s odd.  So I scroll all the way down for the discussion section for this book and find out that in the post at the very top that this book is not even real.  It was actually someone who responded to the post titled “ Exciting! “.

Someone on July 13th said there was an interview on YouTube of him saying it’s not real and another person on the 24th said they would like the link to that.  I searched and found it.  I had to watch the first part of the interview then watch the second part of the interview to see and it was the very last question all the way at the end of the interview.

The question was asked at 6:09 and he responded at 6:25 that you can’t listen to what you read on IMDB, he responds about amazon at 6:51 saying you can’t believe any of the “shit” you read on amazon.

Seriously?  I really don’t believe this.  The Q&A session he did in this video was posted on YouTube on May 12 2010 by a woman who clearly sounded annoyed by the video game and novel questions and she clearly had her nose so far up George Romero’s ass, it was any wonder you could hear her chuckling at the questions being asked.

Anyway, I am a bit disappointed that the one thing I did win from GetGlue might never arrive, it was fun to think that it would though.  I guess I can stop waiting for it to come in the mail now.

My Day in Xanth

I spent the day with an ogre and his 7 female companions.

That sounded silly but it’s true.  I sat in my desk chair the entire day reading Ogre, Ogre by Piers Anthony which is the 5th book in the Xanth series.

Earlier this year I committed to starting this book but only read 1 chapter and stopped.  A couple of days ago I finally picked it back up and started reading it again.  I only read 2 chapters then yesterday 3 chapters but today I really got into it and read 5 chapters.  The only reason I stopped reading it was because I had shows on tonight.

What I have left to read of the rest of the book is actually the same amount that I read today.  Actually it’s only 4 chapters but the amount of pages is the same.  I am so tempted to read another chapter tonight but I want to save the rest for tomorrow.

I love the Xanth books because they draw me into the adventure and I don’t want to leave.  I can picture everything that is happening as I’m reading and I can imagine what it would look like if it were a CGI movie.  Although it would be a very long movie but it would be well worth the watch if it were made .

In this story, the Ogre named Smash goes on a trip with a Nymph and despite the fact that being an ogre he eats women, he has made a promise to safely guide her through the very dangerous land of Xanth to help her find what she is looking for.  Along they way he helps 6 other women.

Yesterday as I was reading he was collecting the women and today chapter by chapter most of the women found their mates and the end of their adventures. The point that I’m at he still has 3 more women although I have a feeling one of those women has found her mate and the end of her adventure since she has found the male of her species.

Tomorrow when I finish this book I can finally check another book off my queue then add “Night Mare” which is the 6th Xanth novel.

Reading isn’t as exciting to everyone and who blogs about reading a book but I find it an accomplishment since I have Dyslexia, LD and ADD.  I also find that reading helps me with my writing.  It broadens my vocabulary and helps teach me good grammar, if that makes any sense.

You can see my aNobii profile which shows the books I have read and have yet to read but I will get to eventually.  I want to finish all the physical books before I get to the eBooks then I have a reason to buy a Nook.

Press N’ Open Book Light

Have you seen those commercials for the Snuggie Fleece Blanket that comes with a free “Press N’ Open Book light”?  Well, I bought that book light at Albertson’s last week and it’s crap.

Yeah, it’s real neat that you press a button and the light automatically pops out and it looks very cool when it opens but it only shows the page down the middle.  It’s a total waste of plastic.  It was $5 alone at the store and comes free with the Snuggie but I wouldn’t waste any time with it.

A friend sent me a Mighty Bright Cobra Super L.E.D. book light and not only does it show the page you are reading but it also shows the other page so you don’t have to keep moving the light.  It is way better than the crappy Press N’ Open light.

Xanth

I’ve finished reading the 2nd Xanth book entitled “The Source of Magic”. I’m waiting for the 3rd and 5th book to arrive in the mail and I have the 4th book already.

I really liked The Source of Magic, although the 11th and 12th chapter had me shaken up because of Chester, Crombie and Humfrey, what happened to them.  But when I got to the last 2 chapters I felt more at ease.  I don’t want to give anything away for those who haven’t read these books yet.  I know this one was written in 1979 (or at least published) and many have probably already read them but I’m just now reading them so I’m sure there are many others who have not read them yet.

A friend of mine, Alyce, bought me the 3rd and 5th book and sent them yesterday along with a few other goodies hehe so I have to wait for those to come before my adventure continues.  And I’m sure it will be here on Monday (crosses eyes, fingers and legs).

But what to do with my time while I wait…  Hmmmm…. what shall I do?

Distractions

How is it that some people can read like the newspaper or a magazine with the TV on and people talking nearby?  I don’t read the newspaper because it’s just too much information to read.  I’d rather watch the news to know what’s happening in the world.  I can barely type this without having to look at the TV.

Darrin can sit there reading the newspaper with the news on the TV lol.  I try to read my book and every little noise distracts me.  If there is no noise then the silence is deafening and that is distracting.

I have ADHD so every little thing distracts me.  I am able to read a book if I try hard enough to ignore all the little things but it’s hard.  Especially when the ice cream truck goes by.  The whole time I was reading the Harry Potter novels I was so into them that I was able to ignore noises but there came a point that I had to buy all the Harry Potter soundtracks and it made reading easier.  I would try to hum the main titles in my head while reading, it would help me but I had to buy the soundtrack so I wouldn’t have to think lol.

I’m reading The Source of Magic which is the 2nd book in the Xanth series and I had to go outside today to read it because the TV in the living room was just too loud and the lighting in my room sucks so bad but then it started to sprinkle.  Yeah I was under a roof but the rain drops were coming down so hard on the fiberglass roof it was too DISTRACTING!  LOL

Wasn’t A Reader

When I was a kid my mom read stories to me sometimes.  Not all the time.  I do remember her reading those really thin books that you give to toddlers who can’t read and most of the page is all picture with a sentence at the top or bottom.  Those are about all she ever read to me.  I was never read from a thicker book with no pictures like Pinocchio or Moby Dick or whatever.  I’m not trying to put blame on my mother but I never was very much of a reader growing up.

Now my sister on the other hand was.  I can remember her being in her teens reading horror novels like Christine or Cujo.  I’m just picking names out of the hat.  I do remember my mom and my Aunt Betty reading V.C. Andrews books and my sister would read them after my mom and aunt.  But I never was really interested in reading.  My sister was an A student though and I had “learning disabilities” which later I found out was ADD when I was 26.  I mean really, if anyone or anything is to blame it’s that.

When I was 15 I would see my sister reading her V.C. Andrews novels and I wanted to feel a little like part of the crowd so I asked my mom if she would buy me the V novel and since I had already seen the mini series I already knew what would happen in the book so it made it easier to read.  I did only get halfway through the book though because I lost interest.  Not in the book but reading in general.

When I was 19 I bought the Back to the Future 2 and 3 paperback novels which were basically the movie verbatim.  I hadn’t yet seen the 2nd movie and the 3rd was in theaters so I wanted to read the 2nd book then rent the movie then read the 3rd book then go see it in theaters.  Unfortunately, by the time I was finished with the 3rd book the movie wasn’t in theaters anymore lol.  But eventually I did get to rent it when it went to VHS.

It did make me feel smart to read a book but that was the last book I read until I was 25.  I had bought a Buffy the Vampire Slayer novel called Prophecies : Lost Slayer Serial novel Part 1 when Buffy was still on TV.  I mainly bought it because I was at Barnes and Noble with my aunt and uncle who are avid readers and I felt stupid so I bought a book.  I didn’t want to buy something expensive because I really didn’t have the money to blow on a book that I knew I would probably never read.  It sat in a box in my closet for years.

In December 2005 after Christmas I was going through my boxes looking for something and I came across this thin novel and I thought you know what, I’m going to tackle this.  I started reading it and I was hooked on it.  It certainly kept my interest and I read it all the way through and it only took me maybe an hour.  There were no hard words in there that I would either need a dictionary or a PHD to figure out what they meant.  So I told a friend of mine that I read it and then she bought a book that was all 4 parts in 1 book and I read it all the way through in a very small period of time.  I was hooked on reading finally.

Then I bought the Harry Potter books 1-5 box from Amazon and read them.  It probably took me 4 or 5 days each book which was fine by me, the longer the better.  But, the first 3 books were thinner than the rest and I read the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th one all in the same amount of time as the first 3 which meant that I was getting faster.

Unfortunately though Harry Potter ruined it for me because J.K. Rowling’s books were so easy to read that no other book could keep my interest.  I’d fall asleep while reading other books so I mainly gave up.

Now I’ve started on the Piers Anthony Xanth novels and those are pretty good and keep my interest.  I’ve bought so many books that I thought I’d read and never did so I’m going to try to tackle them all soon.

Online Bookshelf

I just found this website called aNobii where you type in the 10 digit ISBN number on the back of your books and it automatically finds the book through its database and adds it to your bookshelf.

Facebook had something similar to this but for some reason when Facebook went to new Facebook, it made it impossible to use the Bookshelf application.  So I did a search and found this.  I added it as a widget to the sidebar which shows 1 of my books at random at a time.  It has a link that brings you right to my bookshelf on the aNobii website.

I think it’s neat hehe.

A Spell For Chameleon – Part 2

Well I finally finished reading this book about an hour ago. I thought it was a very good book. Although I didn’t get the puns at first because I didn’t think of them as puns but more I was thinking of them as what they were. In the fantasy world that I live in, if they say it’s a Jelly tree then it has jelly inside of it. I don’t take it any other way. So it was a shock to me when I was told that “Jelly Tree” was a pun.

I lived in the world of EverQuest for 6 long years plus I’ve lived in the fantasy realm for a lot longer than that lol. Some people may laugh at that but it’s true. I’ve always been a fan of science fiction and fantasy. So it is no surprise to me when Piers Anthony writes about a blanket plant and I have to assume the leaves are blankets.

Besides all that, I am always making up puns whenever someone says something I come up with this off the wall joke usually including a pun. Nobody laughs, they usually moan.

I had this friend named Bob and he was like me too so he and I were constantly making each other laugh. I would say something and Darrin would say Mike that doesn’t make sense but you could hear Bob laughing in the background because Bob got it. And he was usually the only one. For the rest of the people I had to sit there explaining my joke before they called the men in white coats to take me away.

Getting back to the book though.  I thought it was a very good book.  Every chapter had its own little mini quest or adventure and I was glued to it whenever I read it.  My jaw had dropped to the ground in the last chapter when you know who became King.  Hey, I’m not going to spoil it for anyone lol.  Because I wasn’t expecting that to happen.  But I guess it all ended good and everyone lived happily ever after.  Right?  Well, that is until I start reading the next one.

To be continued in The Source of Magic…
