$5 Footlong? Really?

I’ve loved Subway since the first time I ever went there when I was 18 years old when I moved back in with my parents when they moved to Quartz Hill in the Antelope Valley.  We went there all the time and I remember that I always got the same thing.  The Cold Cut Combo.  To this day that’s the only sandwich I ever get.  Sometimes I’ll be different and get a meatball sub or turkey but it’s usually always the Cold Cut Combo.  It tastes good to me.

Recently in the last few months or so I’ve been seeing the commercials for their $5 footlong.  They are competing with Quizno’s because Quizno’s has a good deal too for $5.  So they are just trying to keep or lure their customers away from the competition.  That’s fine and $5 is a good price for a 12″ sub.

We went to Subway for dinner tonight and they had their sign (or window sticker) that says “Any” which implies what?  All?  That’s what it implies to me.  By saying any that means if I want a footlong meatball sub then it’s $5 right?  Wrong.  The definition of “Any” for Subway means that they have a couple footlong sandwiches for $5.  So isn’t that false advertising?

I’m lucky the Cold Cut Combo just so happened to be $5 for the footlong because that’s what I wanted anyway but it would be nice if they had more of a $5 selection.

I think that if a sign says “Any” then everything should be $5 and not just a select few.  There were maybe 5 items on the menu that were $5 footlong.  That’s not a lot of choice.  When we got to the register to pay for our $5 footlongs they asked if we wanted chips and a drink for $2 more each and we were like screw that.  $1 for a drink and $1 for a little .50 cent bag of chips?  Are you joking?  We could go to the store across the street to buy a bag of Chips and soda which we ended up doing.  We bought 2 large bags of Doritos (buy 1 get 1 free) and 2 bottles of sparkling flavored water for .79 cents per bottle.

I like Subway but I don’t agree with this false advertisement.  I think it’s crappy because they lure you with the promise of a $5 footlong then you are stuck paying $7.59 for the sandwich you intended on buying.

Update: We were shopping today for new work clothes for Darrin and we had to go to Walgreens to pick up some things and decided that we would go to Subway for lunch.  I was bitching about their false advertising and so Darrin purposely ordered something that was not $5, Roast Beef.  It says on the menu that it’s like $6.79 or something like that and he asked is that $5 footlong? And the lady said yes.  We got to the register and the total for both sandwiches was $10.

So Subway, I apologize that I made such a quick judgement.  But in my defense if any footlong is $5 you should change all the prices on your menu board to show that any footlong is $5.  Because I would see the prices and immediately not order something because it doesn’t say $5.

KFC Dollar Menu

Talk about your false advertising.  I’ve been seeing these commercials on TV for the KFC dollar menu where these 2 guys are in the car and the driver is all “you have a dollar menu?” then he looks back to the people in their cars behind them yelling “They have a dollar menu” while the passenger is laughing.

Then there is the commercial with the “spy” asking if they have the secret recipe and asking how much and the guy inside says a dollar.

They show all these things as being a dollar.  Well, we were at the KFC today and their dollar menu had the following products.  KFC Snackers in many different flavors, original, crispy, honey BBQ and one other which I can’t remember.  Then they had 2 biscuits for $1 and 2 pies for $1 and 3 cookies for $1.  That’s it.

They had several other items for $1.49 and $2.49 but that’s hardly a dollar.  Why are things that are a buck and a half or two bucks and a half on the one buck menu?  That’s false advertising.

And speaking of false advertising.  We bought 4 KFC snackers, 2 original for Darrin and 2 crispy for me.  They were so tiny and we couldn’t tell which were original and which were crispy.  But they were so small, I said to Darrin we would’ve been better off going to McDonald’s getting the Chicken sandwiches from their dollar menu because they were twice as big as the KFC snackers.

My opinion, go to McDonald’s, you get more bang for your buck buck buck.  Pun intended.

White Castle Burgers

No we don’t have a White Castle here where I live in Bakersfield, CA but they do sell the little mini burgers in the frozen foods section of our grocery store.  I didn’t buy those because I wanted to make them my own way.

I’ve been seeing these commercials a lot lately for Big City Slider thing that you take this measuring spoon and scoop up the hamburger meat and put the balls into this thing, it has 5 slots and when you filled them all you press them down with the lid.  You then cook the mini burgers directly on your stove top and keep the lid on it and it cooks them from both sides, top and bottom.  It cooks them all the way through to the middle much faster than if you have to flip them.

Well, I don’t have the $25 to shell out for one of those ($20 plus shipping) so instead I just went to the store and bought 1 1/2lb of ground beef (80% fat-free) and I had an egg and I bought some bread crumbs and mixed the meat with the egg and bread crumbs and Darrin added some BBQ spices to the mixture.  I then rolled them by hand and smashed them by hand and cooked them on the skillet.  I then sliced the entire package of Hawaiian rolls and spread mayo on tops and bottoms then put the little mini burgers on the rolls.

The commercial makes you look so incompetent like you can’t make white castle burgers without making a complete mess of things and without the burgers breaking apart lol.  I didn’t have any problems and I also saved $25 so there Billy Maye’s hehe :p.

Since the package of rolls had 12 I had 6 and Darrin had 6.  Luckily there was enough meat.  I thought I was going to be forced to eat 2 rolls without meat hehe.  I love those rolls.  The Hawaiian rolls were so much better than regular plain old rolls too.  I recommend those when making white castle burgers.

Oh, why you ask did I use 1 egg?  My mom taught me when I was a kid that the egg will keep the burgers from falling apart and she’s right.  They don’t fall apart.

KFC Weekend Special

Starting today until Tuesday Feb 17th, KFC has a weekend special for President’s day.  Although their weekend special seems to be about 6 days.  Anyway, the commercial says that you get a whole chicken which is 8 pieces, mashed potato’s and gravy, cole slaw and 4 biscuits all for $12.95.

Well, it’s kinda false advertising.  A whole chicken would consist of 2 breasts, 2 thighs, 2 legs (drumsticks) and 2 wings.  We went there today and the pieces were 4 thighs and 4 legs.  Not exactly a whole chicken.

Personally it doesn’t matter to me.  2 pieces of chicken, mashed potato’s and gravy, cole slaw and a biscuit is enough for 1 meal.  Darrin bought an extra order of Macaroni and cheese, the family size and I added 4 apple turnovers (2 for him and 2 for me).

We don’t normally go there because they are a bit expensive compared to Albertson’s chicken dinner which is like 8 pieces of chicken and 1lb of salad (cole slaw, potato salad or macaroni salad) and a package of 4 Hawaiian rolls for like $5.  I do prefer KFC over grocery store chicken but I just can’t afford it.

It was good though mmmm mmmm so good.

Cake Anyone?

I like cake.  I guess you could say I love cake.  I love cake so much that if I died and they did an autopsy on me they would find that I have frosting flowing through my veins.

I was watching this show on Food channel which isn’t a channel I normally watch because I find myself drooling after awhile lol. This show was called Ace of Cakes and they really do make some cool looking cakes.  I have to give them props for that.  I went to their website to see how much they charge for a cake.  They say that since all of their cakes are different they can’t give you a specific price but they require a minimum of $1000 for all their cakes.

HOLY COW!  $1000?  For a cake?  I like cake but not that much.  Sorry but I can’t afford a $50 cake.  The best I can do are the $15 cakes at Albertsons.  If I were ordering cake for a wedding that would be one thing and even then I’d probably be looking at $200 at best.  But for a birthday party, the birthday boy/girl will have to settle for either homemade or grocery store cake lol.

More Fruit Cake?

When Butch (Darrin’s brother) came home from work what was he carrying? A fruit cake hehe. Well its bed time, I’ve taken an Ambien, I’m going to start reading a very good book a very good friend gave to me for Christmas. I will blog more tomorrow after the days events.

Fruit Cake In The Making

WOW! I knew there was a lot of ingredients but this is a lot. The fruit and nuts are soaking in rum right now for 3 hours then I get to mix the rest of the ingredients. It’s 5lbs. which if sold at a specialist bakery would be $100. So I’m at least satisfied with that. I really can’t wait for it to be done.

Hours later…

The fruit cake is in the oven for 3 1/2 hours.  I’m looking forward to taking it out and tasting hehe.  By the way, I said earlier that the fruits and nuts were 5lbs.  Well, with the batter it’s over 7lbs.  After I put the fruit cake mix in each aluminum container I weighed them (there are 3 cakes) and they are about 2 3/4lbs each.

Update: 1 1/2 hours to go.  Boy does it smell so good.  I keep looking at it and see it rising and see the color of the cake getting darker and just the smell makes me want to just take it out of the oven early and just take a slice.  But I gotta let it cook all the way because if I don’t it’s not gonna taste right lol.

Update: Ok, I guess I forgot to update this post way back when but the fruit cake was a complete success.  I followed the directions completely and it over cooked just a little so it tasted a little burned but that didn’t stop it from doing a disappearing act real fast.  Next Christmas I’m going to make this again since it was such a hit but not cook it for the exact complete time that it said.  Maybe slice off (pun intended) half hour.  Just to make sure it doesn’t get burned.

Cost Of A Fruit Cake

I just cannot believe how much it costs to make a fruit cake.  Now I know why those things are so expensive.  Dang $51 so far and I still need eggs and margarine.  By the time I have all the rest of the ingredients it will be $55.  I just hope that it makes a whole lot of fruit cake.  It better.

I wanted to make it so bad because I can never find it in the stores and when I find it online it’s so expensive.  A 1lb cake is $25.  I’m sure that I have about a 10lb cake so far lol.  I’m going to have to split it up into a few smaller ones because fruit cake doesn’t have a very good reputation.  I bought these small loaf pans that have lids (disposable pans) and there are 3 in the pack so I can make 3 small.  I also have a regular size loaf pan which I’m going to start with then put the rest in the smaller ones.  I want to bring the small ones because I know that people are going to waste big slices if they don’t like it and it’s too expensive to throw away.

All I know is if I see 1 piece of fruit cake in the trash I’m gonna lose it lol.  Just kidding.  Maybe lol.

Fruit Cake

I plan on buying ingredients to make Fruit Cake for Christmas.  But, instead of just doing it the traditional way by either making it like a loaf in a loaf pan or doing a circle with the middle missing, I’m going to do a loaf but then cut it down the middle then cut the 2 pieces down their middle so it’s 4 long pieces so when you slice it, it comes out like cracker sized.  This way if people aren’t sure if they like it or not then they can just get a slice to taste it.  This way people aren’t taking these huge pieces of fruit cake then taking a bite and realizing how gross it is then throwing the rest of it in the trash.  That would piss me off considering how expensive they are.

Now, when I say “how gross it is” I’m speaking purely on other peoples opinions of fruit cake.  I like fruit cake.  I’ve loved fruit cake since I was a kid so to me it’s not gross at all.  Frankly, I don’t know why people would even give them as gifts at Christmas time considering how expensive they are to buy.  They are also a little expensive to make, not as much as if you were to buy one but still expensive.

But cutting them in cracker sized slices is a good idea, I think it is.  You can probably also make cup cake sized fruit cakes so they are individual and you can use the cup cake paper things so you don’t have a huge mess.  Hey that’s a very good idea.  I’m also thinking of putting some german chocolate cake frosting on the top of the fruit cake to disguise it a little lol.  I’m sneaky that way.
